Abstract
Purpose: To summarize the current status of iris-supported phakic intraocular implantation in patients with keratoconus.
Summary: Keratoconus is a corneal disorder where the central or paracentral cornea undergoes progressive thinning and steepening, causing irregular astigmatism that negatively impacts the visual function and the optical quality of the patients. The refractive surgery in keratoconus has been discussed by several authors. Phakic intraocular lens implantation could be a reasonable alternative.
Conclusions: Iris-supported phakic intraocular lens implantation can be considered a safe and effective alternative in the treatment of stable keratoconus over a wide range of ametropia.

Compliance with Ethical Requirements
Pablo Sanz Díez, Alfredo Vega Estrada, Roberto Fernández Buenaga, and Jorge L. Alió declare that they have no conflicts of interest. All procedures were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional and national) and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2000. Informed consent was obtained from all patients for inclusion in the study. No animal studies were carried out by the authors of this chapter.
This study has been supported in part by a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (Fondo europeo de desarrollo regional FEDER) and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiviness, Instituto Carlos III, Red Temática de Investigación Cooperativa en Salud (RETICS) “Prevención, detección precoz y tratamiento de la patología ocular prevalente, degenerativa y crónica”. Subprograma “dioptrio ocular y patologías frecuentes” (RD12/0034/0007).
