Abstract
The governance of the newly founded RCPCH was built on a large Council with a strong regional representative structure inherited from the BPA. Regional representation was based upon the prevailing NHS administrative structure of 21 Regional Health Authorities and Boards. The aim was to provide a democratic pathway for individual members via their regional representatives to Council. This generally worked well in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but only variably in the English regions, some of which had regular and formally constituted regional meetings, tagged on to educational events and supplemented when necessary by extraordinary meetings.
