Abstract
This chapter considers the role that the theory and practice of systemic consultation can play in understanding and influencing edge-of-care contexts. Issues relating to power, patterned responses and the need for reflective and reflexive practice are discussed. Examples are given of how indirect systemic work can support greater effectiveness and positive outcomes when risk and decision-making issues arise in children’s social care settings and similar contexts. Ways of putting theory into practice are described, including methods of consultation with teams, managers and front-line practitioners. A case study also illustrates how direct and indirect clinical work can be combined.
