Our Lady of Juquila: Nation, Region, and Marian Devotions

Marian Devotions, Political Mobilization, and Nationalism in Europe and America

Abstract

This chapter examines the devotion to Mexico’s Virgin of Juquila, an image whose popularity has surged in recent years. Digging into the history, it challenges the enduring popular and scholarly conflation of Mexican nationalism with the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The clash between secular nationalism and Catholic counter-nationalism still distorts our understanding of Marian devotion. Internalizing Mexico City–centered Catholic propaganda, we have overestimated the Virgin of Guadalupe’s importance. Nevertheless, as neoliberal socioeconomic shifts and political reforms have taken shape, neither secular nor Catholic institutions are sustaining their cultural campaigns of past decades. As a result, the ideological legacies are giving way to a shared institutional game of catch-up as religious cultural trends take shape beyond their control.
