Chapter

Abstract

Besides the difference in the management of rectal and colon cancer in the early and nonmetastatic stages (UICC I–III), treatment approach in metastatic disease does not relevantly differ between these both primary tumor locations. Hence, the following review will be about metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Around one quarter of patients with CRC present with metastatic disease at time of diagnosis (synchronous disease), and up to 40% of patients will develop metastases during the course of their disease, resulting in a relatively high overall mortality rate associated with CRC.
