Abstract
Surgery puts patients at the mercy of various stresses, both physiological and psychological. Good pre-operative care of surgical patients is essential for optimum post-operative recovery and long-term morbidity. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach with allied healthcare professionals, GPs, nurses, anaesthetists and surgeons collaborating for the best outcome of the patient. This chapter provides an overview of pre-operative care suitable for medical students and surgical trainees.
