The Functioning of Coastal Upwelling Systems

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

This chapter describes the general physics driving coastal upwelling, various upwelling mechanisms and indicators (e.g. upwelling index), the ecological response to coastal upwelling events, the location of significant upwelling regions, their general biogeochemistry, and various hypotheses for the high abundance of anchovies and sardines in coastal upwelling regions.
