Abstract

This chapter provides a review of the historical successes and the current challenges for education for sustainable development (ESD) in early childhood in Chile. Specific references are made to progress being made with regard to environmental education, gender education, and intercultural education. The chapter also reports on the outcome of research trials carried out using the Environmental Rating Scale for Sustainable Development in Early Childhood (ERS-SDEC) instrument that was developed by the authors in collaboration with international colleagues in the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP).

The trials of the ERS-SDEC in Chile suggested that the five centers randomly selected were inadequate and a great deal of work needs to be done to advance teacher understandings and practice in education for sustainable development. It was observed that there were more materials wasted in the settings than recycled or conserved. A significant conclusion was that the ERS-SDEC tool might itself be applied as a tool in engaging the staff in the clarification of meanings and understandings.
