Abstract
This chapter provides a review of the historical accomplishments and the current challenges for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in early childhood in the Turkey. Specific references are made to progress being made with regard to environmental education, economic education and education for social equity. The chapter also reports on the research trials carried out using the Environmental Rating Scale for Sustainable Development in Early Childhood (ERS-SDEC) instrument that was developed by the authors in collaboration with international colleagues in the World Organisation for Early Childhood Education (OMEP).
The research found that the highest ERS-SDEC scores were reported for the environmental dimension, with many schools meeting the criteria above good and higher. In terms of the social and cultural dimension, some schools met the requirements above ‘good’. For the economic dimension, many schools were found to be performing at inadequate and minimal levels, and this is clearly an area for future development. Turkey is identified as being at a relatively early stage in developing educational programs infusing all of the principles of sustainable development.
