Abstract
Relationships are an important protective factor for physicians. Research has demonstrated that social support in both personal and professional domains may mitigate the impact of work-related stress. Institutional programs that support and promote humanism, empathy skills, and conflict resolution may have positive psychological benefits and counter the significant stress that physicians experience on a daily basis. This chapter discusses the small but growing literature on social support for physicians and describes a range of health promotion interventions and institutional resources for improving perceived support. The chapter ends with a few case illustrations in which young physicians are faced with navigating common interpersonal challenges.
