Abstract

Male accessory gland infections (MAGI) have a negative impact on the secretory function of the male accessory glands, hence altering seminal fluid. MAGI can be classified according to the presence/absence of microorganisms in microbial forms, when it is possible to identify the presence of microorganisms, and in inflammatory forms, characterized by leukocytospermia and/or overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The treatment of choice of the microbial forms of MAGI is based on antibiotic administration, followed by anti-inflammatory drugs and antioxidants. The inflammatory forms, characterized by leukocytospermia and ROS overproduction, are mainly treated with anti-inflammatory drugs followed by antioxidants. Antioxidants may be prescribed both to ameliorate the symptoms of MAGI and to reduce sperm oxidative stress-induced damage that can lead to male infertility.
