Abstract

In previous sections we have touched on the importance of protecting eco-systems to disaster risk reduction. Such protection is part of an overall effort to stop and reverse environmental degradation in general, an effort that begins by recognizing that the natural environment is a social good that cannot be privatized and must be preserved for the sake of human survival. There are no truly ‘private’ interests with respect to this issue; there is only a social interest in cleaning up after ourselves and social risks in not doing so. Eco-suicide leaves no survivors.
