Abstract

The meaning of life should not be an ancillary concern of citizenship. In the information age, citizenship should not proceed without questions of meaning. Yet, this idea of meaning is not just a personal one. Rather, meaning is both personal and collective. Meaning is ultimately framed as necessary to the human species. Human beings create new ideas which give them meaning at the present moment, as well as later generations in the future. This chapter provides a number of templates to help students start considering these ideas of meaning. The final two templates call attention to the role that meaning should play in the political process. The chapter concludes by linking the ideas of meaning for democracy with relevant skills, dispositions and school climate attributes.
