Creating Hemodialysis Access in Intravenous Drug Users: A Vascular Surgeon’s Perspective

Abstract

Access surgeons face multiple obstacles in dealing with patients with active intravenous drug-use addictions. Lack of adequate superficial veins, medical noncompliance, associated psychiatric illness, and needs for durable-functioning access are some of the issues that need to be addressed when dealing with this unique patient population.
