Abstract

Dairying activity is an important sub-sector of the agriculture in Indian economy. India has the largest number of livestock in the world and urbanization provides potentiality to dairy activity because of the demand for milk and dairy products which increases with growing urban population. This chapter investigates the contribution of dairy activity to the total income of households of villagers in urban fringe of Aligarh city. Urban Fringe is a transitional zone where rural and urban landscapes merge together and it offers lots of new avenues and a lot more opportunities for new livelihoods. The study finds that the majority of rural households keep livestock for dairying activity and it has adapted as the most likely livelihood option in the urban fringe of Aligarh city.
