Abstract

Man, 54 years old, ex-smoker since 20 years (25 smoked cigarettes for 15 years), mildly overweight, and hypertensive since 10 years. He began to be pharmacologically treated with antihypertensive drugs from the age of 50: his doctor prescribed him hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg per day. Initially, he tried atenolol 50 mg, but he had to stop it because of perceived decrease in sexual performances. Three months ago he suffered from a gout attack that resolved in a couple of weeks. Then, he was treated with allopurinol 300 mg ½ tablet per day which was not very well tolerated because of gastrointestinal discomfort. Recently, he came to our hypertension clinic for a general checkup because his blood pressure seems to be totally out of control.
