Part of the book series: Comparative Territorial Politics ((COMPTPOL))

Abstract

This chapter compares the three countries (and the regions across the three countries) and provides a summary of the main findings of the book. It concludes that territorial mobilisation has been an important driving force in the development of regional social policies in Italy, Spain and Great Britain. Instead, the role of left-wing mobilisation has been more ambiguous and inconsistent. The last sections of the chapter focus on the importance of historical legacies and provide a preliminary assessment of the territorial politics of welfare in other European countries (France, Germany and Belgium). Finally, the chapter considers the effect of the Great Recession on multi-level social policy and the challenges that regions may face in an age of austerity.
