French Intellectual Fascism and the Third Way: The Case of Bertrand de Jouvenel and Alfred Fabre-Luce

Abstract

While fascism is now regularly approached as a transnational phenomenon, its relationship with Europeanist and internationalist intellectual currents in interwar, wartime and postwar Europe has still not received sufficient scholarly attention. This article analyzes the political thought of Bertrand de Jouvenel and Alfred Fabre-Luce, two French Europeanist intellectuals who turned towards fascism during the 1930s. Its main argument is that two elements were crucial in their fascist drift: their Europeanist and pacifist convictions in international politics, and their rising awareness of social issues. Within Jouvenel’s and Fabre-Luce’s interpretation, fascism came to stand for lasting chances of Franco-German rapprochement and the perspective of an anti-capitalist revolution without class war.
