Abstract
This chapter examines technology required for deep space missions. Issues dealing with propulsion, radiation, and communication are addressed. The challenges of creating and storing food and water for long-term human survival are discussed. NASA plant physiologist Dr. Ray Wheeler talks about the challenge of growing food on a planet with an extreme environment such as seen in the current movie “The Martian”.
