Lunate Bone Morphology and Its Association with Kienböck’s Disease

Kienböck’s Disease

Abstract

The etiology of Kienböck’s disease has yet to be determined. Several previous investigators have suggested that the shape of the lunate may predispose to the development of Kienböck’s disease. Lunate shape and morphology have been classified by overall size, dorsal and volar articular surface height, as well as proximal and distal articular surface shape. Variations in shape can be associated with aberrant ligamentous connections and irregular bony trabecular framework. In addition, lunate morphology can influence carpal kinematics with associated alterations in transmitted load through the carpus. As such, lunate morphology may affect the pathogenesis and management of Kienböck’s disease.
