Abstract

Epidemiological studies throughout history have provided useful information on disease processes and sometimes breakthroughs in medicine that have easily saved millions of lives. For example, the cholera epidemic in nineteenth-century London was nearly wiped out from the single-handed study of John Snow who showed that the death rate from cholera was much higher in the zone where a public water pump was used by the community. After disinfecting the water and pumping in chlorine, the outbreak quickly ended.
