Abstract

The project Nouveau Recueil Complet des Fabliaux (NRCF) was conceived by Willem Noomen, Lein Geschiere and Nico van den Boogaard in 1972 and resulted in three volumes, published between 1983 and 1998. In the article reprinted here, van den Boogaard retraces the history of the edition of the fabliaux, while shedding light on the methodological principles that guided the various editors. Next he focuses on the problem of demarcating the genre, finally to demonstrate the assumptions underlying the selection of texts defined as fabliaux.
