Abstract
A famous novelist and a famous literary scholar, both to be found in Neophilologus: Karl Robert Mandelkow, a famous Goethe specialist, extremely learned, and W. G. Sebald, who began his career as a scholar of literature but ended up as a producer of literature. This essay presents a critical appreciation of their two contributions to Neophilologus.
