Abstract
So many people influence and support a career, it is difficult to begin naming them all -- let alone to finish doing so. I am, therefore, going to begin very near the beginning and allow this little story to stand in for all the others that I could have told. It concerns my mother, Jane Wheeler Boling, and one of the many practical bits of wisdom she offered me in the course of parenting a child very like, yet completely unlike, herself. That bit of wisdom has reverberated through my life and career, and I take this opportunity to thank her gratefully for it.
