Abstract
The development of advanced nursing practice and diverse advanced practice nursing roles along with the increased presence of this discipline signals a new era for nursing. This upsurge in visibility appears to be a way to enhance career prospects in the nursing profession. Successful integration of advanced practice nursing roles into the healthcare workforce includes promoting professional advancement. Creating a career path acknowledges advanced practice nursing contributions to healthcare settings, provides concrete recognition of this nursing role, and potentially leads to personal job satisfaction. This chapter explores multiple factors to bear in mind when considering developing a career pathway or clinical ladder that includes advanced practice nursing roles and advanced levels of practice. In addition, principles that form the foundation for professional progression are offered. Illustrations of country specific career pathways are described.
