Critical Limb Ischemia

Abstract

Ischemia of the extremities is commonly treated in clinical practice. Most such occurrences are related to primary vascular—especially arterial—disease. However, on occasion, one may encounter upper and lower limb ischemia due to neoplastic processes. These patients may have either acute, subacute, or chronic slowly progressive benign or malignant lesions effecting the limb circulation.

Acute processes are particularly seen with emboli from more central benign (such as endocardial myxomas), embolic aortic or other malignant disease, and surgical dissection of pulmonary carcinoma—especially those involving the atria. Chronic etiologic causes of arm or leg ischemia may originate from sarcomas, leukemia, therapeutic programs for such, and paraneoplastic syndromes.
