Abstract

The discovery by Rutherford in 1919 that \(\alpha \)-particles could induce nuclear reactions and transform isotopes and elements opened up the possibility to produce new isotopes in the laboratory. However, only after the discovery of the neutron by Chadwick in 1932 was the nucleus understood in terms of consisting of neutrons and protons. The chapter describes the discovery of radioactive isotopes in the 1930s produced with neutron and \(\alpha \) sources as well as with the first accelerators. The complicated history of the discovery of fission is also included.
