Abstract

In China, Tuber indicum occurs naturally in subtropical evergreen oak forests and in deciduous broad-leaved forests. Most of these forests, however, have been replaced by Pine plantations, which currently represent the major habitats where T. indicum is found. Pinus yunnanensis, Pinus armandii and Keteleeria evelyniana are currently the most common hosts of T. indicum. Soils where T. indicum ascoma are harvested are mainly developed on igneous crystal rocks or on metamorphic rocks characterized by a deep paleo-alteration profile inherited from past tropical quaternary climates. Soils at elevations of less than 2000 m above mean sea level (amsl) are Ferrisols, which become Ferralic Cambisols at elevations of between 2000 and 3000 m amsl and Cambisols at more than 3000 m amsl. Despite their ferralic characteristics and high acidity of many parent rocks, these soils generally display high base saturation caused by the continuous exposure to airborne calcaric dust, with the exception of the Gongshan region. The pH level of the upper horizon (0–10 cm) is on average 6.68, varying from 4.78 to 7.6. The texture of these soils is relatively homogeneous: mainly loam, silty loam and clay loam.
