Abstract

Asthma, or Reactive Airways Disease, is arguably the most common chronic illness encountered by children. Children experience wheeze and shortness of breath during an asthma attack or flare-up. This chapter reviews key questions used to determine if referral to a pediatrician is needed. Ideas for education of children and parents about asthma triggers, use of inhalers, and prevention of asthma attacks are presented. Health educators can play a key role in school-based prevention and intervention efforts for children with asthma. Educating teachers and developing care management plans for children with asthma can assist in their illness management. Ensuring that children carry their inhalers and know how to use them will improve medical management of asthma symptoms. Ideas for intervention, focusing on education, self-care, and adherence to the medical regimen prescribed by the child’s doctor are reviewed. The importance of following a doctor’s recommendations and resources are also presented in this chapter.
