Abstract
Intermediate medical settings provide care for patients who need hospital-like attention for complex medical conditions lasting for a prolonged period of time. These patients are often too ill for traditional long-term care. The on-call consulting psychiatrist must be aware of the resource limitations in the subacute facility, where nurse staffing may be less than the hospital setting, daily physician (particularly psychiatry) rounds are less common, and there may be significant limitations to the formulary. On-call psychiatrists should make it a habit to communicate with the physicians providing regular/ongoing medical care initially and in follow-up after consulting, to ensure high-quality and safe care.
