Nobrow: Contents and Discontents



Chapter 1 analyzes contemporary book culture in the context of American crime fiction. It refutes a number of critiques habitually leveled at popular genres and argues that American crime mysteries ought to be approached as artistically ambitious and ideologically complex on their own terms. It argues for the framing of this iconic type of American fiction in the context of the history of the twentieth-century USA.
