Abstract
International medical work in both the setting of disaster and volunteerism can be extraordinarily gratifying. The visiting surgeon, however, should be aware of important ethical considerations. These considerations range from patient safety and patient autonomy to the host country’s social, economic, and medical care delivery issues. A better understanding of possible scenarios prior to embarking on these medical missions is important for the health-care professional.
