Researching Lebanese Teachers’ Knowledge and Perceptions of ADHD

Abstract

A research study was conducted in 15 schools in southern Lebanon to answer two research questions, one relating to teachers’ knowledge about ADHD in children of elementary school age and the second to how the gender of the child with ADHD affects the teacher’s perception of the disorder and its subtypes, namely, hyperactivity and inattention. A total of 301 elementary school teachers completed a survey that comprised a questionnaire requiring personal information, a list of statements on ADHD from the Knowledge of Attention Deficit Disorder Scale (KADDS) to which teachers were required to respond, and four vignettes about children with ADHD which teachers were asked to read and then provide a rating. Two groups, each consisting of eight teachers, then took part in focus group discussions which aimed to elicit data on teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of ADHD and its subtypes and their role in identifying and supporting children with the condition. The use of this mixed-methods research strategy helped to enhance the trustworthiness of the study.
