Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment of ADHD in School-Aged Children

Abstract

There have been many attempts to define ADHD, and the term attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been in use since the late 1980s. The disorder affects millions of children across the world, with more boys than girls exhibiting symptoms of ADHD. The causes are attributed to genetic and/or psychosocial factors, and research shows that the culture of the child and his/her gender have a bearing on teachers’ and parents’ perceptions of ADHD. Clearly, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment are all very important for the well-being and education of the child with ADHD and are dependent on teachers having a good general understanding of the disorder and its subtypes, as well as being knowledgeable about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and teachers’ knowledge appears frequently to be lacking, and their perceptions with respect to the gender of the child are often influenced by cultural expectations. In the Arab world, specifically southern Lebanon, there is a great need for research on ADHD and teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of the disorder.
