Headache in Children and Adolescents

Abstract

There are several types of migraine with aura. Migraine with brainstem aura has distinctive and often severe neurological symptoms that deserve to have a separate classification. The presentation is often dramatic and frightening to the child and his/her parents with altered level of consciousness, intense dizziness, vomiting and ataxia followed or associated with severe throbbing headache. On first presentation, the child will need investigations to exclude brain tumour.

Between attacks the child returns to normal health. Reassurance is the main step in management, and the treatment is not specific but follows the same lines of the treatment of migraine with aura.
