Abstract

This chapter will address key issues in the presentation of data in public health intelligence. Data needs to be communicated to create insight, or influence change and the visualisation and presentation of data in public health practice is a core skill and growing in importance. It will show how to select and create appropriate charts, discuss some of the new and developing tools available, and give some examples of how data can influence policy and practice and visualisation can bring insight and clarity.

After reading this chapter you will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of effective data presentation and the key considerations when choosing how to present the data.

  • Understand the different types of data presentation, their strengths and limitations, and when they are best used.

  • Know the key principles and common pitfalls of data presentation.

  • Understand the benefits of interactive data visualisation and how different techniques can be used to enhance data presentation.

  • Know where to go to find further reading and tools that may help you present your data.
