An Introduction to Microwave Imaging for Breast Cancer Detection

Abstract

In this chapter, the anatomy of the breast is presented first. The anatomy of the breast is described primarily from the perspective of microwave imaging, with a focus on the various layers and structure of the breast with differing dielectric properties. Next, the disease of breast cancer is discussed, including the cellular origins of the disease, the variants or types of the disease and the grading of breast cancer. The chapter concludes with an in-depth review of both historical and recent studies of the dielectric properties of healthy and cancerous breast tissue.
