Abstract
Parenteral nutrition is imperative for the neonate or pediatric patient who cannot meet nutrition needs orally or enterally. The pediatric surgeon plays a critical role in determining type of access, acquiring that access, and, in many cases, ordering and monitoring therapy. Macronutrients need to meet the patient’s energy and protein requirements, and additives include electrolytes, vitamins and minerals, and, occasionally, medications. The PN prescription is complicated and requires an understanding of the patient’s current clinical condition and underlying nutritional status as well as anticipated changes secondary to surgery or other interventions.
