Abstract
Acute leukemias are imminently life threatening disorders, which require a quick and precise diagnostic work-up to select the most appropriate therapeutic approach. Acute and chronic leukemias both arise from the malignant transformation of hematopoietic stem cells. According to the lineage from which this process originates myeloid and lymphoid leukemias are discriminated. The discrimination between acute and chronic leukemias is based on their clinical course and their biologic and morphologic characteristics.
