Abstract

The trials and tribulations of trying to find suitable material to use for chromosome preparations and methods of preparation. Creating order out of chaos, squashes and sections. During the first half of the twentieth century, attitudes towards the use of human material without the donor’s permission were very lax, but this not only gave scientists access to otherwise unavailable material; it probably produced some material which was chromosomally abnormal, making it confusing to the investigators. Material came from individuals sterilised with the sanction of the courts. It was a time of eugenics and misguided ideas of race.
