Abstract

In this chapter we address the important topic of quality improvement (QI) and population behavioral health. We approach this task based on a survey of the current behavioral health system and our many years of experience designing and implementing improvement projects in a managed behavioral healthcare setting. The importance of clear operational definitions is highlighted in designing these kinds of projects. We provide an example based on metrics that are used to measure effectiveness of quality programs within health plans and managed behavioral health organizations. We close by discussing some of the complexities and challanges involved in improving population behavioral health.
