Abstract

Christine and Margaretha are two of the daughters of the German astronomers Gottfried Kirch and Maria Margarethe Winkelmann-Kirch. Christine was born in Guben, Germany, in 1696. She was the eldest of the sisters and had an older brother named Christfried, born on 24 December 1694. Margaretha instead was born in 1703, and lost her father at the age of seven. All the sons and daughters of the Kirchs, since the age of 10, were instructed in what was the family business: astronomy.
