Abstract

Maria Cunitz (Cunitia) was born in 1610 in Silesia, a historical region of Central Europe now belonging almost entirely to Poland. Her home town was Schweidnitz, but some more recent sources indicate the city of Wohlau instead, whose current name is Wolow. She was the eldest daughter of Heinrich Cunitz, an open-minded and wealthy doctor and landowner of that region, and Maria Scholtz of Liegnitz, daughter of the German scientist and mathematician Anton von Scholtz, who was counselor of the Duke Joachim Frederick of Liegnitz. Whatever the actual hometown of Maria, it is attested that eventually the family moved to Schweidnitz, today Świdnica, in Poland.
