Abstract

Chaperonins assist the folding of many proteins. Some of these proteins depend more than others on chaperonin assistance and this dependence may be shifted by environmental conditions or single mutations in substrate proteins. Chaperonins facilitate evolution by allowing stepwise acquisition of mutations.
