Abstract

In the last decades, the fast advances of semiconductor technologies fostered a large expansion in the consumer market of multimedia-ready devices due to the continuous increase of computational resources and availability of reliable communication infrastructures. Digital video has been available since the beginning of the so-called information age, but only after the expansion and popularisation of personal computers and high-speed networks did this type of information become so widely present in our daily lives.
