Abstract
The use of ultrasound in neurosurgery predates the use of other intraoperative imaging adjuncts which are more frequently used today. From its early days of discovery and the application of A-mode ultrasound (US), the US evolved into more meaningful and useful B-mode images. Newer advances in the last decade have transformed the imaging capabilities and applicability of intraoperative ultrasound. We review the historical facts leading up to the use of ultrasound as a modern-day imaging tool in neurosurgery.
