The Role of Chronic Prostatitis in Male Infertility: Is There a Relationship?

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Prostatitis and Its Management

Abstract

Prostate infection and inflammation may lead to decreased male fertility through several poorly understood pathways. The current NIH classification of the prostatitis syndrome was applied in reviewing the present knowledge and gaps on the role of prostatitis in male infertility. The exact mechanisms by which chronic prostate disorders affect male infertility remain inconclusive and controversial. Based on the currently standard diagnostic criteria, most cases of chronic prostatitis are abacterial and noninflammatory. However, recent findings of prostate microbiome and inflammatory markers may change the current understanding of the problem as well as clinical practice and future research.
