Abstract

The thin carpet of sediments and the youthful seamounts demonstrate that the floor of the Indian Ocean is probably not older than Early Cretaceous. It formed as a consequence of India, Australia and Antarctica moving away from the supercontinent Gondwanaland in the southern hemisphere. The separation of India from Australia and Antarctica created the floor of the Bay of Bengal, and the breaking away of India–Madagascar from Africa produced the Arabian Sea.
