Abstract
Twentieth century gains in life expectancy, and mid-century health and economic security improvements combined with rising rates of educational attainment and social acceptance of new roles for older adults have led to increasing participation rates in a variety of formal and informal older adult educational endeavours, and to the proliferation of new types of older learner programs and organizations across the United States. While future prospects are encouraging, those most economically privileged are more likely to benefit than other socio-economic groups.
