Abstract
Prompt treatment after ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is often not possible at the presenting center and transfer to specialized care is necessary. Many hospitals do not have systems in place to expediently transfer such patients, and professional standards are yet to achieve widespread implementation. This chapter will discuss the fundamentals of transfer for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, including the current state of emergency department (ED) deaths, transfer, patient selection challenges, key components of effective regionalization of care, optimizing care during transfer, the potential benefits of best-practice guidelines, and future directions to address these goals.
